Isle Royale (Devil's Island) is the largest and only inhabited island of French Guiana. It's located about 12 miles off the coast of French Guiana. Devil's Island is an area of 34.6 acres and can be walked around with ease. Long ago a leper colony, then a French prison, now Devil's Island is a tourist attraction and station for rocket scientists. The base at Kourou is responsible for launching nearly half the world's commercial satellites.

We arrive to Devil's Island and it looks very pretty, however it once served as the headquarters for the notorious 19th century French penal colony made famous in the film "Papillion." It is, along with neighboring Royale and St. Josephs's Islands, part of the Salvation Island group. The group's name originated in the 1600's when settlers fled the mainland to escape the desease ridden jungle.
